Choosing among staff augmentation companies in Chennai
Good staff augmentation companies in Chennai let you interview the actual engineer, employ that engineer themselves, assign IP to you, and accept your parent company’s security, background-check and device rules in the contract. Check who replaces someone who leaves, what notice applies when you scale down, and how on-site days work. Radiatus works remotely on IST with no Chennai premises, and joins your ceremonies and tools, with on-site visits by agreement.
Most of what you find is a directory. Here is how to judge the vendors behind it
Search for staff augmentation companies in Chennai and most of page one is directories, listings and marketplaces, with a couple of vendors in between. A list of names does not tell you whether a firm employs the engineers it shows you, whether those engineers can pass your parent company’s background checks, or what happens when one resigns mid-quarter. This page gives you the questions that do.
It sits under our staff augmentation service and our comparison of augmentation and a project agency, and alongside our wider cloud and DevOps services for Chennai. Here the focus is the Chennai buyer: GCCs scaling to a parent company’s plan, manufacturers on the Sriperumbudur–Oragadam belt, BFSI technology centres and SaaS teams along OMR.
Radiatus is an independent engineering studio, registered in Dover, Delaware and as an MSME in India. We do not keep Chennai premises. Our engineers come from our own delivery practices, work on Indian time, join your Teams or Slack, repositories and sprint ceremonies, and report to your leads. When an in-person day genuinely helps, such as PI planning, an audit walkthrough or a go-live, we agree it in the contract.
Chennai’s technology landscape, and why teams here augment
The corridor runs south along OMR. Most of Chennai’s software and GCC work sits on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, which everyone still calls OMR, from Taramani through Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur down to the SIPCOT IT Park at Siruseri. TIDEL Park in Taramani, opened in 2000, was Tamil Nadu’s first purpose-built IT park, and a newer TIDEL Park at Pattabiram serves the western suburbs. Guindy holds older technology campuses closer to the city centre. Long commutes along OMR shape how teams plan their in-person days, so fit any vendor’s on-site visits around your own calendar rather than a fixed rule.
GCCs set the pace of hiring. Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s investment promotion agency, describes Chennai as home to more than 350 global capability centres, spanning BFSI, life sciences, automotive, engineering and technology. Nationally, the Zinnov–Nasscom India GCC Landscape Report 2026 counts 2,117 GCCs running 3,728 units with about 2.36 million people in FY2026. The state also pays for new senior roles: the 2024–25 Tamil Nadu budget speech announced a payroll subsidy for new GCCs of 30, 20 and 10 per cent over three years for jobs paying above ₹1 lakh a month. Targets agreed with a parent company rarely wait for recruitment to catch up.
Manufacturing brings its own IT problems. West and south-west of the city, the Sriperumbudur–Oragadam belt holds vehicle assembly, component suppliers and electronics manufacturing. Their IT teams handle ERP and MES integration, plant networks that must stay separate from office IT, supplier portals that customers audit, and engineering data that must not leave the building. The needs are short and specific: an integration engineer for a plant rollout, a security engineer before a customer audit.
BFSI operations and SaaS shaped the talent pool. Banks, insurers and financial-services firms run large operations and technology centres in the city, where audit findings, identity clean-up and change control drive the backlog more than new features do. Chennai is also where several Indian SaaS companies started: Zoho is headquartered on the city’s southern edge, and Freshworks, founded in Chennai in 2010, listed on Nasdaq in September 2021. We mention them as public context, not as clients. They are part of why SaaS operations, SRE and support-engineering experience runs deep here.
Why Chennai teams augment. Indian employers commonly set long notice periods, so a candidate who accepts your offer may join months later. GCC ramp-ups come with dates attached. Compliance work has deadlines too: most DPDP obligations apply from May 2027, and customer audits arrive on their own schedule. And some skills are needed for one project, not for a career. Augmentation covers the gap; it should not replace building your own team.
Staff augmentation vs hiring vs managed service for a Chennai GCC
Most GCCs use all three. The question for each gap is which model fits it.
| Criterion | Staff augmentation | Direct hire | Managed service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who directs the work | Your GCC leads, sprint by sprint | Your GCC leads | The provider, against a written scope and SLA |
| When someone is productive | After you interview a shortlist and complete onboarding | After sourcing, offer, the candidate’s notice period and onboarding | After transition and a stabilisation period |
| Headcount | Usually outside approved headcount; check how your parent counts contractors | Uses an approved position | Outside headcount; sits in a services budget |
| Parent security policy | Flows down through the contract; engineer uses your devices or VDI | Applies directly | Provider’s own controls, which your parent must assess |
| Knowledge retention | Good if work lives in your repositories and wiki; plan the handover | Strongest, while the person stays | Lives in provider runbooks unless you require copies |
| Cost structure | Monthly or hourly rate per engineer | Salary, benefits, statutory costs, recruitment | Monthly fee for the agreed scope |
| Best for | Ramp-up gaps, deadlines and specialist skills | Core roles you will need for years | Stable operations with clear service levels |
A pattern that works: augment to hit the first milestones, hire permanent owners in parallel, and move steady-state operations to a managed service once they stop changing every sprint.
What a GCC’s parent company will expect from any augmentation vendor
GCCs inherit rules written at headquarters. Ask these before you read a single CV, because a vendor that cannot meet them wastes everyone’s interview time.
| Requirement | What to ask the vendor | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Security policy flow-down | Will you sign our information-security schedule as written? | Yes, with any exceptions listed in writing before signature, not discovered in month two |
| Background verification | Who runs the checks, to what standard, and before or after the profile is shared? | A named process agreed in the contract, completed before access is granted |
| Devices and VDI | Can your engineers work only on our laptops or through our VDI? | Yes; no client data on personal or vendor machines unless your policy allows it |
| ODC-style segregation | Can you work inside a segregated environment with location and network restrictions? | Yes, with the restrictions written into the statement of work |
| Personal data | Will you sign a processing agreement that meets the DPDP Act? | Yes; client data stays in client systems and deletion on exit is confirmed in writing |
| Vendor certifications | Do you hold the certificate or report our parent requires of suppliers? | A straight yes or no, early. If no, ask whether your parent can accept other evidence |
| Exit | What happens to access, devices and knowledge when an engineer rolls off? | Same-day access removal, device return, and a handover inside your repositories |
How augmentation works for a Chennai team when the vendor is remote
Remote does not mean distant when you share a time zone. Our engineers work Indian hours, so your stand-up, backlog refinement and retrospective happen at the same time for everyone. In practice:
- Your tools, your ceremonies. The engineer joins your Teams or Slack, Jira or Azure Boards, and repositories, and reports to your lead. We do not run a parallel process.
- Access on your terms. Named accounts through your SSO, your devices or VDI where policy says so, and least-privilege roles that grow with trust.
- On-site days by agreement. PI planning, quarterly reviews, audit walkthroughs, incident drills and go-lives are the usual reasons to be in the room. Frequency and travel terms go into the contract up front.
- Clear notice terms. Monthly or hourly rate per engineer, no long-term lock-in, and notice periods for scaling down or replacement agreed before the start.
- IP and confidentiality. NDAs are signed before access, and IP created in the engagement is assigned to you.
Skills Chennai teams augment most
- Cloud and DevOps: landing zones, Terraform, pipelines, Kubernetes. Our guide to hiring DevOps engineers in India has a skills matrix and interview kit.
- Security engineering: IAM clean-up, logging, vulnerability remediation and audit evidence. If you are preparing for certification, see ISO 27001 consultants in Chennai.
- AI engineering: LLM features, agents, evals and data pipelines. See hiring AI developers in India and AI agent development in Chennai.
- Integration: APIs, ERP and MES connections, and interface engines, including HL7 interfaces for teams that need that skill. See systems integration.
- Full-stack development: TypeScript, Python, Go and PHP engineers working through your backlog. See software development.
Questions to ask a staff augmentation company in Chennai
- Is the engineer on your payroll, or are you subcontracting to another firm or a freelancer?
- Can we interview the exact person who will join, and run our own trial task?
- What did this engineer work on in the last two years, in enough detail for our lead to judge?
- Who carries out background verification, to what standard, and when?
- Will you accept our security schedule, device policy and VDI rules in the contract?
- Is IP created during the engagement assigned to us, and are NDAs signed before access?
- What is the notice period to scale down, and to replace someone who is not working out?
- If the engineer resigns, how is a replacement found and how is the handover run?
- How is the rate set (monthly or hourly), and what is not included: travel, devices, overtime?
- What overlap and response times apply if we have teams in other time zones too?
- How often will someone from your side check in on fit, and with whom?
- Will you sign a data processing agreement that fits the DPDP Act?
- How do on-site days work, and who pays for travel?
- If a project or managed service would suit us better, will you say so?
The first two weeks of an augmented engineer inside a Chennai GCC
GCC onboarding has more gates than a start-up’s, and most delays come from them rather than from the engineer. Plan them before the start date:
- Before day one: background verification cleared to your standard, NDA and IP assignment signed, access request tickets raised with your service desk, and a device or VDI seat allocated.
- Days 1–3: the parent company’s mandatory training (security awareness, data handling, code of conduct), SSO and MFA set-up, and a walkthrough of the architecture and the squad’s working agreement.
- Days 4–7: read-only access to repositories and non-production environments, pairing with a permanent engineer, and a first small change through your normal review.
- Week 2: ownership of a real backlog item, attendance at every ceremony, and a short check-in between your lead and us on fit and any access still missing.
If access tickets take a week to clear in your organisation, raise them as soon as you choose the engineer. Paying for days spent waiting for a VDI login helps nobody.
Red flags in a staff augmentation proposal
- Profiles with no names or detail until you sign, or a different person turning up from the one you interviewed.
- A minimum term of a year or more with no exit except paying out the remainder.
- No written answer on replacement when an engineer resigns.
- Reluctance to accept your device, VDI or background-check rules.
- Vague answers on where the engineer will work from and on which devices.
- A rate card that quietly bundles a project manager you did not ask for.
Staff augmentation companies in Chennai, Bangalore and Dubai: reading the shortlist
Directories and marketplaces list hundreds of firms, and many pages ranked for this search are listings rather than vendors. Treat a listing as a starting point and test each firm with the questions above. Three filters remove most of the noise: whether the firm employs its engineers, whether you can interview the actual person, and whether the contract states notice and replacement terms. A firm with a Chennai address is not automatically closer to your team than a remote one on IST; what matters is overlap, access discipline and how quickly a replacement arrives.
The same checklist works if you are comparing a staff augmentation company in Bangalore, where GCC and product teams face similar pressures (see our Bangalore page), or in Dubai, where India’s 1.5-hour lead gives almost a full shared working day.
Contract, GST and TDS points for Chennai buyers
- GST: expect 18 per cent on an Indian vendor’s invoice for IT services. A registered GCC or company can usually claim it as input tax credit.
- TDS: since 1 April 2026 deductions sit in section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, with rates and thresholds carried over from the old Act. Whether an augmentation invoice is treated as contract work or as fees for technical services depends on the contract wording, so let your chartered accountant decide the row before the first payment.
- Data protection: the DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025 with an eighteen-month phase-in. The Act allows a data fiduciary to use a processor only under a valid contract, so the augmentation agreement needs processing terms if engineers touch personal data. Our DPDP checklist covers the controls.
- Scale-down and replacement terms: write both notice periods into the contract, along with what happens to devices and access on the last day.
How Radiatus engineers join Chennai teams
Five common shapes. In each one you interview and choose, the engineer comes from our own delivery practice, and work happens in your tools under your leads.
GCC ramp-up cover
The problem
The parent company’s hiring plan says the team doubles this year, and recruitment is behind before it starts.
How we do it
Engineers join your squads on IST while you hire permanent staff, follow your ceremonies and definition of done, and hand over to the permanent owners as they arrive.
What you get
- Engineers inside your squads and sprints
- Work kept in your repositories and wiki
- Handover plan to permanent hires
- Scale-down on agreed notice
Engineers for a compliance deadline
The problem
An ISO 27001 audit, a SOC 2 window or DPDP readiness needs technical controls built, and the team is busy shipping.
How we do it
Security and DevOps engineers implement the controls your compliance lead has scoped: access reviews, logging, encryption, vulnerability fixes and evidence. Certification itself comes from an accredited body or audit firm, not from us.
What you get
- Technical controls implemented as code
- Evidence collected as you go
- Fixes for audit findings
- Runbooks your team keeps
Cloud and DevOps capacity
The problem
Pipelines, cloud tickets and a Kubernetes upgrade sit behind feature work, sprint after sprint.
How we do it
DevOps and platform engineers take the infrastructure backlog, working through your change process and reviews, with read-only access first.
What you get
- Infrastructure as reviewed code
- Pipeline and environment fixes
- Upgrade plans with rollback steps
- Documentation for every change
AI and integration specialists
The problem
You need an LLM feature, an agent pilot or a tricky integration for a few months, and nobody in-house has built one.
How we do it
A specialist joins for the duration of the work, starts with evals or interface specifications, and leaves the knowledge behind in tests and runbooks.
What you get
- Eval set or interface specification first
- Feature or integration behind your reviews
- Traces and monitoring
- Handover walkthrough
Full-stack developers
The problem
The product roadmap needs more hands than the team has this quarter.
How we do it
Full-stack engineers in TypeScript, Python, Go or PHP pick up tickets from your backlog and follow your code review and testing rules from week one.
What you get
- Tickets delivered through your reviews
- Tests alongside every change
- Participation in your ceremonies
- Notes for whoever picks the work up next
Typical Chennai augmentation scenarios
Illustrative examples, not client case studies.
| Chennai team | Typical gap | How augmentation fills it |
|---|---|---|
| A GCC in its first two years | Parent hiring targets outrun recruitment and notice periods | Engineers in your squads now; handover to permanent hires as they join |
| IT team at an auto or electronics supplier | Plant ERP and MES integration, network separation, customer security audits | An integration or security engineer for the rollout or audit window; see systems integration |
| BFSI operations or technology centre | Audit findings, identity clean-up, slow change control | Security and DevOps engineers working inside your change process; see security & compliance |
| SaaS product company on OMR | SRE cover, Kubernetes cost, SOC 2 evidence, a first AI feature | One or two specialists for a set period; see SRE & observability |
| Product team that needs an HL7 or FHIR interface | A skill nobody in-house has used before | An integration engineer for the interface work, documented for your team; see HL7 integration |

Questions about staff augmentation in Chennai
We will not rank competitors, and most lists online are directories rather than tests. Judge each firm on whether it employs its engineers, lets you interview the exact person, accepts your security and device rules, assigns IP to you, and writes notice and replacement terms into the contract. A firm that tells you when a project or managed service fits better is usually worth a call.
No. Radiatus is registered in Dover, Delaware and as an MSME in India, and delivers remotely. Our engineers work Indian hours, so they share your working day, stand-ups and sprint ceremonies. On-site days at your premises for planning, audits or go-lives can be arranged by agreement, with the frequency and travel terms written into the contract.
By agreement, yes. Most work happens remotely through your devices or VDI, and in-person days are planned around events where being in the room helps, such as PI planning, quarterly reviews, audit walkthroughs or a go-live. Tell us your expectations at the start so they go into the contract.
Send us the supplier requirements before any interviews. We will go through them line by line and say plainly which we meet, which need agreement, and which we cannot meet. That covers security schedules, background verification, device and VDI rules, data processing terms and any certificate or report your parent requires of suppliers.
A monthly or hourly rate per engineer, set by role and seniority, with no long-term lock-in and notice periods for scaling down or replacement agreed in the contract. Radiatus does not publish rates; you get a written proposal after a free consultation. Indian invoices carry GST, and TDS treatment depends on the contract, so involve your accountant early.
It depends on the skills and seniority you need, how many interview rounds you run, and how long your onboarding and background checks take. Because there is no recruitment cycle or candidate notice period on your side, it is usually much quicker than a direct hire. We give you a realistic start date once we understand the role.
Yes, remotely in both cases. Bangalore teams share our time zone exactly. Dubai teams are 1.5 hours behind India, so the working days overlap almost entirely. The same vendor checklist on this page applies, and the engineers work in your tools and ceremonies wherever your team sits.
Tell us. We discuss what is not working and, if needed, propose a replacement and support a handover so knowledge stays in your repositories and documentation. Replacement and scale-down notice periods are agreed in the contract before the engagement starts, so there are no surprises mid-quarter.
Neither is better in general. Augmentation suits ramp-up gaps, fixed deadlines and specialist skills needed for months. Direct hiring suits core roles you will need for years. Many GCCs augment to hit early milestones while recruiting permanent owners, then hand the work over.
Have a gap in a Chennai team that will not wait for hiring?
Tell us the skills, the squads and your parent company’s vendor rules. A senior engineer will reply with profiles to interview, or with an honest note that another route fits better.
