Kubernetes gives you extraordinary flexibility — and an extraordinary ability to pay for capacity you never use. The good news: a handful of disciplined practices keep clusters efficient without sacrificing reliability.
Set requests and limits that reflect reality
Resource requests drive scheduling and, ultimately, how many nodes you pay for. Requests set too high reserve capacity that sits idle; too low and pods get throttled or evicted. Base them on observed usage, and revisit them — application behaviour changes.
Autoscale at every layer
- Horizontal Pod Autoscaler to scale replicas with demand
- Vertical Pod Autoscaler to right-size requests over time
- Cluster Autoscaler / Karpenter to add and remove nodes automatically
Together they ensure you run the smallest footprint that still meets demand.
Use spot capacity for the right workloads
Spot/preemptible nodes cost a fraction of on-demand. Fault-tolerant, stateless and batch workloads are ideal candidates. Keep critical stateful services on stable capacity and let the scheduler place the rest on spot with sensible disruption budgets.
Bin-pack, don't scatter
Efficient scheduling packs pods tightly onto fewer nodes. Consolidation tools drain and remove underutilised nodes so you're not paying for half-empty machines. This alone often reclaims 20–40% of node cost.
Make cost visible per team
Namespace- and label-level cost allocation shows each team what their workloads actually cost. Visibility changes behaviour faster than any policy — engineers optimise what they can see.
Kubernetes efficiency isn't a one-off cleanup; it's a set of defaults and autoscalers that keep the cluster honest as it grows.
